How Big Is a 5,000-Square-Foot House?

What does a 5,000-square-foot house look like?

A 5,000-square-foot house has 5,000 square feet of combined floor area. If all of that area were on one level, a simple example would measure 50 × 100 feet. A square with the same area would be about 70.71 feet per side.

Illustrative arrangement Example dimensions Total floor area
One level 50 × 100 ft 5,000 sq ft
Two equal levels 50 × 50 ft per floor 5,000 sq ft total
Five equal levels 1,000 sq ft per level 5,000 sq ft total

These are area calculations, not typical floor plans or claims about room count. A real house may use a different footprint and distribute its area among rooms, hallways, stairs, storage, and more than one floor.

A house's floor area is different from the lot area. A 5,000-square-foot parcel includes the property outside the house too; see our 5,000-square-foot lot guide. The floor-area number alone does not tell you the lot size, yard size, or buildable area.
