Average Kitchen Size: U.S. Survey Data & Layout Examples

What is the average kitchen size?

Kitchen size depends on how the area is defined. A 2019 NAHB report based on a November 2018 survey of 153 single-family builders reported 326 square feet allocated to kitchen areas in the average new home. That figure includes kitchen areas that may be open to another room.

When a kitchen was a distinct, separate room, the survey reported an average of 288 square feet; 70.6% of surveyed homes had a separate kitchen. The report measures builders’ estimates for typical new homes, not every U.S. kitchen or the current housing stock.

Kitchen square footage in small and large homes

The survey’s averages change by home size and by whether the kitchen is a separate room:

Survey measure Reported kitchen area
All-home average allocation to kitchen area, including open layouts 326 sq ft
Separate kitchen, all surveyed homes 288 sq ft
Separate kitchen in homes under 2,000 sq ft 195 sq ft
Separate kitchen in homes 3,500 sq ft or larger 424 sq ft

The 195- and 424-square-foot figures describe separate kitchens in two home-size groups. They are not formal labels for every “small” or “large” kitchen. The 326-square-foot allocation and 288-square-foot separate-room average answer different questions.

Kitchen dimensions and illustrative layouts

Square footage does not give one fixed length and width. Multiply the clear interior length by width to calculate a rectangular footprint:

Example dimensions Floor area
10 × 12 ft 120 sq ft
12 × 16 ft 192 sq ft
12 × 24 ft 288 sq ft
16 × 20 ft 320 sq ft
20 × 21.2 ft 424 sq ft

These are arithmetic examples for comparison; the NAHB survey did not publish those kitchen shapes or dimensions. In an open-plan home, kitchen activity may share a larger room with dining or living areas. A plan’s kitchen area is not necessarily a walled-off room.

Is there a standard or minimum kitchen size?

The NAHB survey reports average areas, not a universal standard, design minimum, or required kitchen footprint. Kitchen layouts vary with counter and appliance placement, storage, dining space, accessibility, and whether the kitchen opens into another room.

“Standard kitchen dimensions” can also mean cabinet, appliance, or work-aisle measurements. Those are different questions from the total floor area covered here. Check the relevant product specifications and locally adopted rules for a specific remodel or construction project.

Frequently asked questions

How many square feet is an average kitchen?

The NAHB report gives 326 square feet for kitchen-area allocation across surveyed typical new homes, including open layouts. A separate kitchen room averaged 288 square feet when the kitchen was distinct.

What is considered a small kitchen?

The survey’s separate kitchens in homes under 2,000 square feet averaged 195 square feet. That is a survey subgroup, not a universal definition of “small.”

What is considered a large kitchen?

Separate kitchens in surveyed homes of at least 3,500 square feet averaged 424 square feet. The report does not set a threshold that makes any kitchen “large.”

What are the standard dimensions of a kitchen?

There is no single length-and-width pair. A kitchen’s area can take different rectangular shapes, and the survey reports square footage rather than measured dimensions.

Does this page give standard refrigerator or cabinet dimensions?

No. Refrigerator and cabinet sizes are product measurements, separate from the kitchen’s floor area.
