Residential Stair Dimensions: Width, Tread, Riser & Headroom

Residential stair dimensions at a glance

The 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) lists residential stair references for covered one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses. Its key figures are a 36-inch clear width, a 10-inch minimum tread depth, a 7¾-inch maximum riser height, and 6 feet 8 inches of headroom. See ICC’s 2021 IRC, Chapter 3.

Measurement 2021 IRC model-code reference How it is measured
Clear stairway width 36 in (3 ft) Clear width above the handrail zone
Clear width at/below handrail height 31½ in with one handrail; 27 in with handrails on both sides Includes treads and landings
Tread depth At least 10 in Horizontal, front-to-back between leading edges
Riser height No more than 7¾ in Vertical between adjacent tread leading edges
Headroom At least 6 ft 8 in Vertical above the sloped line at tread nosings
Straight-run landing depth At least 36 in (3 ft) In the direction of travel

The IRC is a model code, not automatically the current law in every city or state. Jurisdictions adopt editions and may amend them. Verify the locally adopted requirements for a real project.

Stair width, step depth, and riser height

Measure clear width side to side across the usable stairway, not the outside width of the stringers or walls. The 2021 IRC calls for 36 inches clear above the permitted handrail height; at and below that level, the clear width may be 31½ inches with a handrail on one side or 27 inches with rails on both sides.

A stair tread is the horizontal step surface. Its depth runs from the front edge toward the back and must be at least 10 inches under this model-code reference. The tread’s full side-to-side dimension is the stairway width. A riser is the vertical distance from one step to the next; the maximum is 7¾ inches. Within one flight, tread depths and riser heights must also stay within the code’s uniformity tolerance.

Headroom, landings, and handrails

The 2021 IRC model code lists 6 feet 8 inches minimum headroom, measured vertically from the sloped line at the tread nosings or from a landing surface. A straight-run landing is at least 36 inches deep in the direction of travel and at least as wide as the flight it serves.

The code also requires a landing at the top and bottom of a stairway, with a limited exception for certain interior stairs where a door does not swing over the top of the stairs. Handrails are required on at least one side of each flight with four or more risers; the referenced handrail height is 34 to 38 inches above the nosing line. These are model-code provisions with exceptions; check the locally adopted code.

How long is a residential staircase?

There is no single stair length: it depends on the floor-to-floor rise, the chosen riser height, tread depth, and landings. Here is an arithmetic example for a hypothetical 8-foot rise:

  1. Eight feet is 96 inches vertically.
  2. At a maximum 7¾-inch riser, at least 13 risers are needed because 96 ÷ 7.75 is more than 12.
  3. Thirteen equal risers would each be about 7.38 inches high.
  4. A straight flight with 13 risers has 12 treads. At a 10-inch minimum tread depth, their horizontal run totals 120 inches, or 10 feet, before adding landings.

This example explains the calculation; it is not a universal stair plan or a complete construction drawing. Actual floor heights, local code, landings, openings, and framing change the layout.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should stairs be in a house?

The 2021 IRC model reference is 36 inches of clear width above the handrail zone. At or below handrail height, the stated clear minimums are 31½ inches with one handrail or 27 inches with two. Local code may differ.

How deep is a standard stair tread?

The 2021 IRC lists 10 inches minimum tread depth, measured horizontally from the leading edge toward the next riser. “Tread width” is sometimes used loosely; side-to-side width is the stairway width.

What is the maximum residential stair riser height?

The 2021 IRC model-code maximum is 7¾ inches, measured vertically between adjacent tread leading edges. Uniformity within the flight also matters.

How much headroom do stairs need?

The model-code reference is 6 feet 8 inches measured vertically from the line adjoining the tread nosings, subject to exceptions.

Are these the rules for commercial stairs?

No. This page covers residential IRC references only. Commercial and workplace stairs use different codes and standards.

Is a 36-inch stair width universal?

No. It is a 2021 IRC model-code reference for covered residential stairs. Check which edition and amendments your jurisdiction has adopted.
