Half Acre Size: Dimensions, Square Feet & Visual Guide

How big is half an acre?

Half an acre is exactly 21,780 square feet. A square with that area has sides approximately 147.58 feet long. A rectangle measuring 132 × 165 feet contains the same area.

Half an acre is written as ½ acre or 0.5 acre. In metric units, it is approximately 2,023.43 square meters, or 0.2023 hectares.

Acreage states total area. It does not establish a plot's frontage, depth, boundary length or amount of usable space.

Half-acre lot dimensions

For a rectangle, width × length = area. These hypothetical dimensions each produce half an acre:

Width × length Area
132 × 165 ft 21,780 sq ft
99 × 220 ft 21,780 sq ft
66 × 330 ft 21,780 sq ft
100 × 217.8 ft 21,780 sq ft
About 147.5805 × 147.5805 ft 21,780 sq ft before rounding

If a rectangular plot is 100 feet wide, its length must be 21,780 ÷ 100 = 217.8 feet to contain half an acre. There is no single required width and length.

For a square, the side is √21,780 ≈ 147.5804865 feet. Keep the unrounded value during calculations. Multiplying rounded sides can produce a small area difference.

These examples assume right angles and straight boundaries. An irregular parcel requires its actual shape and dimensions, rather than just one width multiplied by one depth.

What does half an acre look like?

Picture two 66 × 165-foot rectangles beside each other. Each contains a quarter acre; together they form a 132 × 165-foot rectangle.

                     132 feet total
              <------------------------->
              +------------+------------+
              | | |
   165 feet | 1/4 acre | 1/4 acre |
              | 66 x 165ft | 66 x 165ft |
              | | |
              +------------+------------+
                   Total: 1/2 acre
                    21,780 sq ft

Labeled schematic, not a scale drawing or a surveyed subdivision.

See the quarter-acre size guide for the smaller component. Joining two equal areas doubles the area, but it does not double every side.

If you prefer a square reference, imagine a square a little under 148 feet across. A 148 × 148-foot square would contain 21,904 square feet, 124 square feet more than half an acre.

Half an acre in square feet and square meters

NIST lists one acre as 43,560 square feet. Divide by two:

43,560 ÷ 2 = 21,780 sq ft

Unit Equivalent of ½ acre
Square feet 21,780 sq ft
Square yards 2,420 sq yd
Square meters 2,023.4282112 m²
Hectares 0.20234282112 ha
Acres 0.5 acre

The metric values use the international foot of 0.3048 meters. For everyday use, rounding to 2,023 square meters gives a convenient estimate.

“Half an acre in feet” needs a distinction: the direct area conversion is to square feet. To find a distance in feet, specify the plot's shape or give an additional measurement.

How far is it around a half-acre lot?

The perimeter depends on the shape. Equal areas can have different distances around their boundaries.

Hypothetical shape Full geometric perimeter
Square, using unrounded sides About 590.32 ft
132 × 165 ft rectangle 594 ft
99 × 220 ft rectangle 638 ft
66 × 330 ft rectangle 792 ft

For a rectangle, use perimeter = 2 × (width + length). The 66-foot-wide example has the same area as the 132-foot-wide example but a much longer boundary.

These are complete geometric perimeters, not fence orders. Use the actual measured boundary and account for the portions you intend to fence, openings and other project details.

Acreage alone cannot tell you how long it takes to walk around a parcel either. You need both the route length and an assumed or measured walking speed.

Is half an acre a lot of land?

That depends on the reference and intended use. Here are straightforward area comparisons:

Reference Relationship to half an acre
Quarter acre Half an acre is twice the area
One acre Half an acre is half the area
Three acres Half an acre is one-sixth the area
Ten acres Half an acre is one-twentieth the area

For the larger reference, see three acres visualized.

As an arithmetic example, a 2,000-square-foot ground footprint occupies about 9.18% of a half-acre area. Subtracting it leaves 19,780 square feet. That remainder includes all land outside the footprint, not just a backyard.

The calculation does not show where a building can go or how much land is suitable for a particular use. Shape, access and site conditions matter alongside total area.

Frequently asked questions

Is half an acre 100 by 200 feet?

No. That rectangle contains 20,000 square feet, which is 1,780 square feet less than half an acre.

Is ½ acre the same as 0.5 acre?

Yes. Both mean exactly half of one acre, or 21,780 square feet.

How long is half an acre?

It has no fixed length. A rectangle could measure 132 × 165 feet or 66 × 330 feet. A square would have sides about 147.58 feet long.

Does a half-acre property have a half-acre backyard?

Only if the backyard itself contains that area. When half an acre describes the entire property, buildings and other portions are included in that total.

Can I tell the land's price from its acreage?

No. Acreage states area, not value. A meaningful price comparison needs the location and characteristics of the actual property.
