How Big Is a 7-Inch Pizza? Size, Slices & Comparisons

How big is a 7-inch pizza?

A round 7-inch pizza measures 7 inches across its center, equivalent to 17.78 cm. Its radius is 3.5 inches, and its calculated circular area is approximately 38.48 square inches.

Think of a circle that fits inside a 7 × 7-inch square, touching the middle of each side. The circle does not fill the square's corners.

Diameter tells you the width of the pizza. It does not specify crust thickness, topping quantity, weight or the number of slices. A baked pizza may also differ slightly from its nominal menu size or form an imperfect circle.

Visualize the diameter and radius

The diameter runs from one outer edge through the center to the opposite edge. The radius covers half that distance.

To make a physical paper reference, mark a center point and draw a circle with a 3.5-inch radius. Measure the full width afterward to check that it is seven inches.

Using NIST's inch definition, the metric conversion is 7 × 2.54 = 17.78 cm. A picture on your screen will not necessarily display at that physical size.

7-inch pizza area and comparisons

For a circle, area = π × radius², as explained in BYU–Idaho's circle-area lesson.

For a seven-inch diameter:

Area = π × 3.5² = 12.25π ≈ 38.48 sq in

Pizza diameter Calculated area Compared with one 7-inch pizza
7 in 38.48 sq in Reference
8 in 50.27 sq in About 30.6% more area
10 in 78.54 sq in About 2.04 times the area
12 in 113.10 sq in About 2.94 times the area
14 in 153.94 sq in Exactly 4 times the area

The calculations assume perfect circles. They compare the whole surface, including the outer crust, and do not establish equal thickness or equal food weight.

Why a 14-inch pizza is four times the area

Doubling the diameter doubles the radius. Squaring that radius multiplies the area by four: 14² ÷ 7² = 4.

Four seven-inch circles therefore have the same combined calculated area as one fourteen-inch circle. Two seven-inch pizzas provide only half that area. See the 14-inch pizza size guide for larger-size comparisons.

How many slices are in a 7-inch pizza?

There is no fixed slice count determined by the diameter. A restaurant can cut the same pizza into four, six or another number of pieces.

If the pizza is divided into equal triangular sectors:

Equal slices Fraction per slice Calculated area per slice
4 ¼ About 9.62 sq in
6 ⅙ About 6.41 sq in
8 ⅛ About 4.81 sq in

These are cutting examples, not claims about a particular restaurant. Check the actual menu or ask how the pizza is cut.

More slices make each piece smaller; they do not increase the total pizza. A square-cut pizza can have unequal pieces, so dividing the total area by the number of pieces would give an average rather than each piece's exact size.

Is a 7-inch pizza enough for one person?

There is no universal serving count. Whether the pizza suits one person's meal depends on appetite, crust, toppings, other food and the portion that person wants.

Use the known size as a comparison rather than relying only on labels such as “small” or “personal.” A seven-inch pizza has approximately 49% of the surface area of a ten-inch pizza. That can be a useful reference if you already know how a particular ten-inch pizza fits your meal.

If a seven-inch pizza is cut into four equal slices, two people taking two slices each receive half a pizza apiece. That describes how the pizza is divided; it does not predict whether those portions will satisfy them.

For comparing menu prices, divide the actual price by the calculated area. Keep crust, toppings and applicable charges comparable. A price-per-area calculation is one comparison, not a measure of taste or nutrition.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 7-inch pizza 7 inches from the center to the edge?

No. Seven inches is the diameter. The center-to-edge radius is 3.5 inches.

Is a 7-inch pizza half of a 14-inch pizza?

Its diameter is half as long, but its circular area is one-quarter as large.

Is an 8-inch pizza much bigger?

It is one inch wider and has approximately 30.6% more circular area, assuming both pizzas are round.

Does a 7-inch pizza have 49 square inches of area?

No. 49 square inches is the area of a 7 × 7-inch square. The seven-inch circle inside it has approximately 38.48 square inches of area.

How many calories are in a 7-inch pizza?

Diameter alone cannot determine calories. Use the restaurant's or product's nutrition information for the specific crust, recipe and toppings.

Does its box tell me the exact pizza diameter?

No. Measure the pizza itself across the center. Packaging dimensions and the size of the contents are separate measurements.
