Badminton Court Dimensions: Official Singles & Doubles Sizes

Official badminton court size: doubles and singles

A full badminton court is 13.4 meters (about 44 feet) long. The doubles court is 6.1 meters (about 20 feet) wide; the singles court uses the same length but is 5.18 meters (about 17 feet) wide. These are the official playing dimensions between the relevant boundary lines in the Badminton World Federation court diagram.

Court format Length Width Playing area, approx.
Doubles 44 ft (13.4 m) 20 ft (6.1 m) 880 sq ft (81.7 m²)
Singles 44 ft (13.4 m) 17 ft (5.18 m) 748 sq ft (69.5 m²)

The court is one rectangle with extra sidelines marked inside it for singles. Singles and doubles use different side boundaries; the full outside width is used for doubles.

Which lines mark a badminton court?

The doubles sidelines mark the full 20-foot width. The singles sidelines are about 1.5 feet (0.46 m) inside each doubles sideline, leaving a playing width of about 17 feet. The back boundary lines mark the 44-foot length.

The service lines divide each side into front and back service areas. The short service line is 1.98 meters (about 6 feet 6 inches) from the net. In doubles, the long service line is 0.76 meters (about 2 feet 6 inches) inside the back boundary; singles serving extends to the back boundary. The BWF Laws of Badminton specify 40 mm (about 1.6 inch) line widths and state that boundary lines are part of the area they define.

Badminton net height and court equipment

The net is 1.524 meters (5 feet) high at the center and 1.55 meters (about 5 feet 1 inch) at the doubles sidelines. The posts are 1.55 meters tall and sit on the doubles sidelines, even when the game is singles. The BWF rules also specify a net at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) wide.

Measure net height from the playing surface, not from the bottom of a portable net base. For a portable or recreational setup, follow the equipment maker's installation instructions and check the playing surface before measuring.

Badminton court dimensions in feet and meters

The official metric dimensions convert to approximately 44 × 20 feet for doubles and 44 × 17 feet for singles. Multiplying the rounded U.S. dimensions gives an estimated playing area of 880 square feet for doubles and 748 square feet for singles (about 81.7 m² and 69.4 m², respectively). The area is a simple rectangle calculation; the lines themselves are included in the court boundary.

Use the metric measurements when laying out a regulation court because they are the governing dimensions. The feet values are rounded for easy planning. A gym or recreation room needs additional floor space around the court for players and safety; that surrounding clearance is separate from the marked playing-area size.

How to compare badminton and other court sizes

A badminton doubles court is 44 by 20 feet, while its singles boundaries narrow the usable width to 17 feet. That makes the court 880 square feet for doubles or 748 square feet for singles. Compare those playing dimensions with our guides to tennis court dimensions, soccer field dimensions, and American football field dimensions.

These figures describe the court markings. They do not include room for benches, circulation, spectators, equipment, or the clearance needed around an indoor court.
