Tennis Court Dimensions: Length, Width & Square Feet

How big is a tennis court?

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) gives the marked tennis court a length of 78 feet (23.77 m). The court is 27 feet (8.23 m) wide for singles and 36 feet (10.97 m) wide for doubles.

Court lines Length Width Playing area
Singles 78 ft (23.77 m) 27 ft (8.23 m) 2,106 sq ft (about 195.7 m²)
Doubles 78 ft (23.77 m) 36 ft (10.97 m) 2,808 sq ft (about 260.9 m²)

The area figures are calculated from the playing dimensions. They cover the rectangle inside the court lines, not the full land or building footprint.

Tennis court dimensions in feet and yards

The official playing length of 78 feet equals 26 yards. Across the marked lines, a singles court is 9 yards wide, while a doubles court is 12 yards wide.

                         78 ft / 26 yd
       +-------------------------------------------+
       | singles width: 27 ft / 9 yd |
       | +-----------------------------------+ |
       | | | |

The doubles sidelines mark the full 36-foot width; the inner singles sidelines define the narrower 27-foot singles court. The length stays 78 feet for both formats.

Square feet and surface area of a tennis court

Multiply the marked length by its width to find the playing area:

  • Singles: 78 × 27 = 2,106 square feet (about 0.048 acres).
  • Doubles: 78 × 36 = 2,808 square feet (about 0.064 acres).

These are the areas inside the court lines. The complete facility needs additional space beyond those lines for movement and other features. Do not use the playing-area figure as the exact size of a home's yard, an indoor building, or a fenced court parcel.

Indoor, residential, and professional court sizes

The marked playing dimensions are the same whether the court is outdoors, indoors, at a residence, or used for professional play: 78 × 27 feet for singles and 78 × 36 feet for doubles under the ITF dimensions.

The total installation footprint is larger because space outside the lines may be needed for safe movement, fencing, seating, walls, lights, or other site features. Those additions depend on the facility and its governing requirements, so there is no single total footprint implied by the playing-court dimensions alone.

“Average court size” can also be ambiguous: the ITF gives standard playing-line dimensions rather than one universal size for every property's complete tennis facility.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a standard tennis court?

The marked court is 78 feet long, which equals 26 yards or about 23.77 meters.

How many square feet is a tennis court?

Inside the singles sidelines, the playing area is 2,106 square feet. Across the full doubles sidelines, it is 2,808 square feet.

Is a tennis court 36 feet wide?

The full doubles court is 36 feet wide. The singles court uses the inner lines and is 27 feet wide.

How many acres is a tennis court?

The marked singles rectangle is about 0.048 acres; the doubles rectangle is about 0.064 acres. These calculations exclude surrounding facility space.

Are indoor and residential courts a different size?

Their marked playing lines use the same official dimensions. A complete indoor or residential installation needs additional space whose size depends on the site and facility requirements.
