Short Bus & Shuttle Bus Dimensions and Capacity

Example short school bus dimensions

“Short bus” is an informal label, so it does not identify one fixed length or passenger count. Micro Bird’s T-Series Type A school bus specifications show how the footprint changes by model:

Micro Bird T-Series model Overall length Approx. length Overall width Maximum passenger capacity
4N 233 in 19 ft 5 in 86 in 19
5N 253 in 21 ft 1 in 86 in 24
6N 274 in 22 ft 10 in 86 in 25
6R 274 in 22 ft 10 in 86 in 15

These are manufacturer-listed maximum capacities and exterior measurements for the models shown. Seating plans, accessibility equipment, and local requirements can change the usable passenger configuration. Micro Bird T-Series specifications.

Shuttle bus size example

A shuttle bus is also built in multiple lengths and configurations. For one concrete example, Turtle Top’s VanTerra specification lists an overall length of 21 ft 3 in to 22 ft 10 in, an exterior width of 85 to 96 inches excluding mirrors, and maximum capacity of 14 to 17 passengers. Treat this as one model-family example rather than a universal shuttle-bus size. Turtle Top VanTerra specifications.

How to check a bus’s size and capacity

Before comparing buses, check the exact model and floor plan. Confirm overall length and width for parking or storage, overall height for garages and covered entrances, and the seating plan for the passenger count you need. A listed maximum capacity may not match a configuration that includes wheelchair positions or extra luggage space.

For commercial shuttle chassis, manufacturers offer multiple wheelbases and body builders can finish the bus differently. Ask for the completed vehicle’s exterior dimensions and seating layout, not just the underlying chassis specifications.
