Room Dimensions in Square Feet: Common Layout Examples

Calculate room square footage from dimensions

For a rectangular room, multiply the inside length by the inside width after converting both measurements to the same unit. If the room measures 9 × 12 feet, its floor area is 108 square feet. A 12 × 13-foot room is 156 square feet, and a 12 × 20-foot room is 240 square feet.

Inside dimensions Area
9 × 12 ft 108 sq ft
12 × 13 ft 156 sq ft
12 × 20 ft 240 sq ft

For an irregular outline, split the floor into non-overlapping rectangles, calculate each one and add the areas. Subtract cutouts only when they are outside the measured floor area. These are arithmetic examples; they do not prescribe a room layout.

What do 350 and 750 square feet look like?

Square footage does not determine one set of room dimensions. A 350-square-foot rectangle could measure 14 × 25 feet, 10 × 35 feet, or about 18.71 × 18.71 feet if square. A 750-square-foot rectangle could measure 25 × 30 feet or 20 × 37.5 feet; if square, each side is about 27.39 feet.

These are shape examples, not suggested dimensions. A 750-square-foot figure may describe an entire small home or apartment rather than one enclosed room. Partitions, closets, kitchens and baths affect how much open floor area remains. See 300 square feet visualized and 200 square feet visualized for smaller area examples.

Is there a standard or average room size?

There is no single room size that describes every U.S. home. A bedroom, living room, bathroom and open-plan area serve different purposes, and even rooms with the same area can have different proportions. “Average room size” is only useful when the room type and source of the average are specified.

For room-specific context, see our U.S. bedroom size guide, living room size guide, and bathroom size guide. The rectangular examples on this page compare floor area; they are not code minimums, comfort recommendations or measured survey averages.

How to compare room sizes

Use area to compare how much floor a space contains, then compare its shape separately. For example, 108 square feet could be a 9 × 12-foot rectangle, while 156 square feet could be a 12 × 13-foot rectangle. A square-foot number alone does not tell you where doors, windows or built-ins sit or whether furniture will fit.

Example Area Approx. square meters
9 × 12 ft 108 sq ft 10.03 m²
12 × 13 ft 156 sq ft 14.49 m²
12 × 20 ft 240 sq ft 22.30 m²
14 × 25 ft 350 sq ft 32.52 m²
25 × 30 ft 750 sq ft 69.68 m²

Metric values use the exact international-foot conversion and are rounded for display. Measure the finished inside dimensions for an actual room; listings and plans may round.

Common room dimensions and square-foot calculations

For a rectangular room, multiply length by width to find floor area. Here are additional examples using feet:

Room dimensions Area
9 × 12 ft 108 sq ft
11 × 12 ft 132 sq ft
12 × 13 ft 156 sq ft
12 × 18 ft 216 sq ft
12 × 20 ft 240 sq ft
20 × 20 ft 400 sq ft
50 × 50 ft 2,500 sq ft

These are arithmetic examples, not recommended layouts. If a room has alcoves or an irregular outline, split it into rectangles and add the areas.
