Quilt Size Chart: Twin, Queen, King & More

Common finished quilt sizes

Quilt dimensions vary with the pattern and the amount of drop desired at the sides of the bed. JOANN’s quilting field guide lists these common finished-project sizes:

Quilt type Finished size (inches)
Wall quilt 29 × 29
Crib 45 × 60
Throw 50 × 65
Lap 60 × 72
Twin 72 × 90
Double / Full 81 × 96
Queen 90 × 108
King 108 × 108
California King 120 × 120

These are useful planning dimensions, not mandatory standards. The source notes that needs may vary by project. See the JOANN Quilting Field Guide.

How to choose a quilt size

Start with the finished dimensions in the chart, then decide how far you want the quilt to hang over the mattress. A quilt intended to cover a bed may need different dimensions from a decorative top layer, and mattress depth, bed height, and personal preference all affect coverage. For a bed-specific reference, compare our Twin Mattress Dimensions and King Bed Dimensions pages.

Quilt-pattern instructions may also distinguish the finished quilt from the larger fabric pieces needed during construction. JOANN’s guide recommends allowing roughly 4 inches of extra fabric on each side during quilting; follow the measurements in the pattern you are using.
