Use clearly labeled items when picturing 10 pounds:
- A 10 lb rice bag: A specific 10-pound rice package lists 160 ounces net. That is a grocery-store example of the weight itself; the outer packaging adds a small amount to what you would lift.
- An adjustable dumbbell set to 10 lb: BowFlex lists its SelectTech 1090 adjustable dumbbell as starting at 10 lb per dumbbell. The selected weight refers to the dumbbell's weight setting, not a universal size for all dumbbells.
- A gallon of water plus a little extra: A U.S. gallon of water is commonly estimated at about 8.34 lb. Add roughly 1.66 lb of water to reach 10 lb; the container adds its own weight.
These examples give a practical sense of the load, but they are not all the same size. For packaged goods, check whether the label says net weight or the shipping listing says shipping weight.
