How Long Is a Kilometer? Miles, Feet & Visual Guide

How long is a kilometer?

A kilometer (km) is exactly 1,000 meters. In U.S. customary units, that is about 0.6214 miles, 3,280.84 feet, or 1,093.61 yards. A kilometer measures length or distance; it does not specify how long a trip takes.

NIST lists an international mile as exactly 1,609.344 meters and an international foot as exactly 0.3048 meter. Using those factors, 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344 ≈ 0.621371 miles and 1,000 ÷ 0.3048 ≈ 3,280.84 feet. See NIST unit-conversion factors.

What is as long as a kilometer?

A standard outdoor athletics track is 400 meters around, so 1 kilometer equals 2.5 measured laps (2½ × 400 m = 1,000 m). World Athletics describes the 400-meter event as one lap on a standard outdoor track. Track markings and measured lanes matter; outer lanes travel farther around the bends.

You can also divide the distance into ten 100-meter segments. That is a way to picture the total, not a claim that every straight path or block is 100 meters. For a shorter comparison, half a kilometer is 500 meters; see the 500-meter distance guide.

How long is 1.2 kilometers?

1.2 kilometers is 1,200 meters, or about 0.7456 miles and 3,937 feet. It is 200 meters longer than one kilometer—the equivalent of half a lap on a 400-meter track.

For a simple comparison, start with the 1-kilometer reference above and add one 200-meter segment. Actual walking routes can be longer than the straight-line distance between two points because of turns, buildings and crossings.
