Square Footage Sizes: Visual Comparisons & Dimensions

Choose the area you want to picture

Square footage describes an area. A long rectangle and a square can have the same floor area while looking very different. Choose a size below for possible dimensions, visual examples and measurement notes.

For room types and floor-area calculations, see the room dimensions guide. For outdoor parcels, use the acreage comparison chart.

These rectangles are calculated examples, not standard layouts or architectural plans. Multiply the two side lengths to check the area.

Floor area One possible rectangle, in feet Detailed guide
200 sq ft 10 × 20 ft Visualize 200 square feet
300 sq ft 15 × 20 ft Visualize 300 square feet
400 sq ft 20 × 20 ft Visualize 400 square feet
500 sq ft 20 × 25 ft Visualize 500 square feet
600 sq ft 20 × 30 ft Visualize 600 square feet
700 sq ft 20 × 35 ft Visualize 700 square feet
800 sq ft 20 × 40 ft Visualize 800 square feet
1,000 sq ft 25 × 40 ft Visualize 1,000 square feet
1,500 sq ft 30 × 50 ft Visualize 1,500 square feet
3,000 sq ft 50 × 60 ft Visualize 3,000 square feet

For smaller spaces, compare 12, 20, 25, 50 and 75 square feet.

How to compare spaces

Start with floor area, then check the shape and usable dimensions. Doorways, built-in fixtures and the position of walls affect how a space can be used. Total floor area in a multi-level home is also different from the footprint it occupies on the ground.

The detailed guides distinguish dimension examples from room or apartment layouts. For a specific floor plan, use its labeled dimensions rather than inferring a layout from square footage alone.
